The plane in question is an unsuccesful (prototype) version of a mass produced (several thousands built) and very well known plane.

What's strange is I couldn't find a pic so I read a lot of web-sites and made an educated guess which turned out to be correct.

I was built by Simon Lake's Torpedo Boat Company in 1916 but was used between the wars on a scientific voyage. I was extensively modified for this voyage.
