That said, the 6 pounders, if handled wisely and skilled, were effective against most other types of tanks, all these pre Tiger and Panzer.

So for example, the desert battle where 6 and 2 pounders made piecemeal of attacking superior panzer forces...
To be fair, Germans manages to retrieve some of the damaged wagons during the night, so their casualties werent as heavy as reported.
Still.
Impressive.

I think its this battle I did read on https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Defence_of_Outpost_Snipe

An incident reported in "Mr Churchill's Tank - The British Infantry Tank Mark IV" about the Coldstream Guards, part of 6th Guards Tank Brigade encountering a Panther near Overloon in Holland.

"...a Churchill of No 2 Squadron, Coldstream Guards encountered a Panther just 500 yards away, but was obliged to move out from cover in order to get a shot at it. Four rounds of 6-pounder APDS followed in rapid succession, each striking the tank on its front plate and each bouncing off without doing any damage at all. The Panther responded to this provocation with four rounds of 75mm AP, all of which penetrated the British tank but, miraculously, did not harm the crew....."
From some of my limited reading on the APDS, I am surprised that they hit the Panther once let alone four times. It is my understanding that APDS was so inaccurate that no Army, other than the British Army, used it until sometime in the late 1950s, after the British figured it out. I am sure everyone has read the the Anti-Armor Gun Tests. There were four tests, one in England before D-Day, two in France and the last one at Fort Knox after the war IIRC. Below are two articles on the tests. I believe there are two more articles, will look later.

There was a discussion on the link below about the accuracy of the 17pdr APDS round. Looking at the comparative accuracy figures from the time for APC v APDS and the various factors that come into play, I would say less accurate might be an appropriate description. It is clearly not a case of guaranteed hit v almost certain miss.

Interesting comment as well on how the British found the accuracy of the US Bazooka.
