Allied war games on Wehrmacht at Normandy

Post by wenty » 03 Jan 2003 04:45

Hi all,
i just watched a documentary that said that the allies dropped fake men and machines at the Pas-De-Calais region prior to D-Day and the Germans had the main body of their troops there ready for the invasion while the allies invaded at Normandy and Omaha beach area. Comments? Any other things like this happen during war?. Cheers. :? :D

There was a major allied deception effort code-named FORTITUDE designed to trick the Germans into believing that a second invasion would take place in the Pas-de-Calais area, and it was successful for a long time. However, it is a different matter if the forces in Calais could have been successfully moved to the Normandy front any sooner in any case. The Germans sent all combat-ready motorised formations to Normandy in a matter of a few days, and the rest would have had to rely substantially on the rail net, which was already overburdened by both troop and supply movements.
