Hi Raoul,
The right spelling of the name is GAVERE and not GAVERNE
The third picture is not from Gavere but was token at Lembergen crossroads in Melle.

Hello to all :D; last part.................

The advance of the IR 171 to the English Channel - Summer 1940.

Only with the surrender of the Belgian Army on May 28, 1940 the regiment could resume its march towards the coast again. On May 29, 1940 crossed the Yser canal due west of Keyem with pneumatic boats. On May 30, 1940 against fierce British resistance got across the Bergues canal by Bulscamp. The next day the enemy had withdrew from the opposing positions and the regiment reached the coast around De Panne.

Hi raoul.
For the first pic it must been Torhout (or in french spelling Thourout) but the first one is more correct
For the second pic it must been Pervijze
Kindly regards and a happy New Year

Hello to all :D; thanks prosper....in fact I did look for Chourout in a map but without success....and yes the nearer town over there was Torhout. I think the German soldier misspelled Chourout instead the French name Thourout..Kindly regards. Raúl M 8-).

Hello to all :D; a new story on this topic.................

The 31. ID assaults the Juliana Canal - May 1940.

The division was organized in Braunschweig in WK XI on October 1, 1936. After the mobilization of August 26, 1939 it was deployed in Silesia due northeast of Oppeln/Opole where it took part of Operation "Fall Weiss" against Poland. Following the successful conclusion of the Campaign in Poland in the year 1939, the 31. ID was transported westward and deployed in the area of the Lower Rhine.

The IR 82 was to operate on the left wing of the division, organized three battle groups at battalion level reinforced with sappers and support weapons. The objective was the bridge located in Maaseik. In the sector assigned to the regiment were four bridges over the Juliana Canal as follows: in Roosteren and Born (concrete sluices that could not be destroyed for obvious reasons), in Illikhoven and Asterberg. While the IR 17 on the right wing would cross the Juliana canal by Echt and Ophoven.

Hello to all :D; more follows.................

The 31. ID assaults the Juliana Canal - May 1940.

On May 09, 1940 at 15: 20 hours the IR 82 was alerted with the Word code "Fruhlingsanfang" (beginning of spring). At 22: 00 hours marched the II. Battalion (reinforced). The March route was as follows: Schierwaldenrath, Langbroich, Schunim, Bucherheide, Groß and Klein Wehagen. Support units attached to the II. Battalion: a Platoon of the 14. Company; a Platoon of the 13. Company; a Platoon of the Pi Btl 31; a Platoon of the Flak Rgt 'Hermann Göring'; a gun of the Pz. Jäg Abt 560 and a Group of the AR 31.

The bridge situated more to the North by Aasterberg was blown up in time and form. The IR 17 advancing there only had small skirmishes with the Dutch border troops.

Hello to all :D; more follows.................

The 31. ID assaults the Juliana Canal - May 1940.

The bridge over the sluice by Roosteren was captured intact by a surprise attack carried out by German special troops disguised as Dutch border guards, after which the AA 31 crossed without mishap the Juliana Canal and headed to take the bridge over the Meuse in Maaseik. However Belgian troops blew up the bridge in time when the Germans tried to disable the demolition charges and in the blast that ensued four Germans were killed and two other soldiers were wounded.
