Lagerpolizei in POW Camps

#1

Post by Mikeo38 » 10 Aug 2017, 10:42

I'd always assumed that the guards in POW camps for captured German servicemen after the end of the war were allied soldiers. However, I came across a reference to the 'detested Lagerpolizei' (camp police). It seems that this was a branch of the post-war German police and that they oversaw their compatriots in POW camps. I can well understand that they were not popular but suppose their introduction was to free up allied servicemen and facilitate demobilisation. I'd be interested to know more about this aspect.
Thanks in advance for any comments.
