Hello to all :D; let's see a little as it was from the point of view of the ground combat ...................

Through Brittany until the conquest of Brest - June 1940.

On June 16, 1940 at 05:00 hours the Command of the 5. Pz moved to its new settlement the Château Neuf in Portmont. The new target of the campaign was the great port of Brest, the beginning of the displacements had been set for 05:45 hours. At 11:00 hours the troops gathered north of the Seine and at 17:00 hours the division began its passage on the bridge. On June 17, 1940 the division pressed for Mayenne. At 07:00 hours departed the vanguard, the Aufkl. Abt. 8 reinforced with antitank and sappers, then the armored Brigade (each armored regiment reinforced with an artillery group), finally the Rifle Brigade; the command of the division at the head of the armored brigade. At 17:00 hours the Aufkl. Abt. 8 arrived at Alençon, which was occupied by the PR 31 that followed behind. The objective of the day, around Mayenne was reached at 21:00 hours.

On June 18, 1940, the advanced to Laudeac, 70 km south of Rennes. The advanced detachment Werner and the armored Brigade by the south route, the Rifle Brigade by the north route. At 12:15 hours the Aufkl. Abt. 8 arrived in Rennes and at 19:30 hours the objective set Laudeac. At 21:00 hours, the Command of the 5th Pz and the PR 31 were there. At 22:00 hours, the Rifle Brigade rested west of Rennes.

On 19 June the advance continued to Brest at 08:00 hours with the same groups and routes of march. At 14:30 hours was found in Landernau the first enemy resistance, a blockade of the viaduct under the railway. After a brief artillery fire the blockade was cleared and the advance continued at 18:00 hours. The division tried to send a parliamentarian towards Brest but the initiative was inhibited by the XV. AK (Mot). Meanwhile the 2. ID (Mot) that advanced to the north of the 5. Pz obtained the surrender of the place by telephone. After passing other blocks, the 2. ID (Mot) marching from the north occupied Brest with a battalion ahead of the Aufkl. Abt. 8. The Command of the XV AK (Mot) ordered the 5. Pz to take over the security of Brest and the coast to the south. The advanced detachment Werner occupied the northeast access of Brest, a battalion of SR 13 St. Divy, a battalion of SR 14 Guipavas and I. / AR 116 in La Foret; the rest of the division in the vicinity of Landernau. At dusk the Command of the 5. Pz entered Brest and settled in the Hotel Continental ..............................

Hello to all :D; more ...................

Through Brittany until the conquest of Brest - June 1940.

On June 20, 1940, in the morning, the artillery marched through Brest on its way to the south coast to occupy positions between Fort du Portzie and Le Conquet for its defense against possible attempts of landings. In the afternoon a meeting was held with all commanders of regiments and battalions where aspects such as security, discipline and accommodation were emphasized. On June 21, 1940, the 2. ID (Mot) was replaced by the the 5. Schütze Brigade, Oberst Degener was in charge as Commander of the city center and the SR 14 stayed into it. In the surroundings were housed the PR 31, SR 13, Pi Btl 89 and the Aufkl. Abt. 8. PR 15 remained in Landernau. For the anti-aircraft defense the Flak Abt. 6 took over the inner ring of the city of Brest and the Flak Abt. 93 the outer ring.

General Lemelsen was designated as Commander of the fortress of Brest and on June 22 as Commander in Chief of Britain and also were subordinated to the division the MG Btl 8, Pz Jäg Abt 652 and MG Btl 15. According to the order of the XV . AK (Mot) dated June 22, the 5. Pz took over the security of Brest and Lorient. In Lorient (conquered by the 11. Schütze Brigade), should remain the MG Btl 1.

Hello to all :D; more ...................

The arrival of the Germans in Saint-Brieuc

The tension was very strong, on June 18, 1940, in the street Gouédic, main axis of Saint Brieuc. So bad that on the morning of June 18, French soldiers raised a barricade at the bridge, "It seemed ridiculous." It was even more confusing when the barricade was removed at the end of the morning. It was rumored that Saint-Brieuc was declared an open city. At the beginning of the afternoon, a long column of vehicles stopped on the right-hand side of the street: "Very well equipped soldiers. It was a half battalion of legionaries returning from the battle of Narvik, Norway. They had landed at Brest. They were waiting for the return of their officers, who had gone to Rennes to the General Staff.

They will wait in vain. The Germans advanced so fast that a Panzer division (actually the 2. ID Mot advancing from the north) appeared on the Rue de Gouédic, around 17:00: "We heard" here are the boches ! "It was unbelievable to see this column of sidecars and machine guns in these types of Nazi uniforms with berets head-to-head. They passed in front of the French soldiers, paying no attention to them.It is not the same with legionaries:" Two hundred of them were of German origin. They wanted to open fire on the Nazis. But a neighbor, Mr. Le Mestre, an old man from 14-18, shouted: "Do not shoot, it will be a carnage!" Commander Cazaud ordered his men to return to the cars, turn and march past the German column, stopped at the top of the street. The Germans did not even react!

The Legionaries returned to Brest from where they embarked for Southampton (in England). Their officers cut off from their troops at Plancoët, found a ship at Saint-Jacut-de-la-Mer for Jersey - they will be surprised to find them there on June 21! "This was the core of De Gaulle's army that will be sent to combat North Africa."
