Battlefields - WWI & WWII

#1

Post by Pips » 22 Feb 2018, 02:57

Just wondering if there were any major battles that occurred in France in 1940 or 1944 that had already seen large battles during WWI. For example on the Somme, Mons, Ypres, Verdun, Cambrai, Passendale, Meuse-Argonne, the Marne, Arras, Passchendaele, Amiens, Villers-Bretonneux, St. Mihiel, Chateau Thierry etc.

The only one I'm aware of is at Arras, with the British tank attack against Rommel in 1940.

I know that all those battlefields of WWI would have been travelled through, both in '40 and '44; but were they the scene of battles?

The entire border region of France from Calais to Switzerland has been the scene of innumerable battles since the Middle Ages. Here is one way to answer your question - attached is a scan of the Flanders and Picardie regions from the IGN Map Product "France: Lieux de Batailles." The blue line the main trace of the WWI trench line. The map only lists major French battles, not those of England / Britain, unless it was fighting the France. Nor are the battles of United States included in the map. The number of battlefields is astounding.
