Allied Search for German Military Personnel Post Surrender
Was there any systematic effort by the Allied armies & occupation administration to account for, take control or, or screen German military men who had avoided surrender and were at large among the civilian population. I have no clue how large this group was, but have run across some anecdotal evidence of soldiers who 'went home' rather than be herded into the PoW detention camps. Any recommended sources or reading on this subject would be appreciated.
Re: Allied Search for German Military Personnel Post Surrender
My working assumption would be no, given the incredibly high number of PoWs the Allies ended the war with. Maybe there were specific searches for war criminals.
Besides, if there were name lists of PoW, I don't know where to find them in the Allied records.

Not unless their name appeared on one of the many WANTED lists, such as CROCASS, or their wartime activities put them in the automatic arrest category. 90% of them simply went home so they were relatively easy to locate. Google "Occupation of Postwar Germany" or "OMGUS" for bibliographies. There are tons of books, scholarly articles and dissertations on the subject. Was there any systematic effort by the Allied armies & occupation administration to account for, take control or, or screen German military men who had avoided surrender and were at large among the civilian population.

Larry, thanks for the direction. I've been doing a casual comparison of how armies were controlled at and post surrender in several wars. The names given are producing results.
