For US try the US Center for Military History https://history.army.mil/

Or the Ike Skelton Combined Arms Research Library (CARL) Digital Library CARL http://cgsc.contentdm.oclc.org/cdm/

For the British start on the WW2Talk forum http://ww2talk.com/index.php

Narrowing it down somewhat to the CMH's actual unit history section:

https://history.army.mil/html/forcestru ... html#tab_5

There's also the following resources on-line:

https://www.history.navy.mil/

[urlhttps://www.afhra.af.mil/][/url]

https://www.usmcu.edu/Research/History-Division/

https://www.history.uscg.mil/

Enjoy.

Many free-for-download unit histories are there: https://digicom.bpl.lib.me.us/ww_reg_his/

Certainly the best source for unit histories packaged after the war and sold/distributed to veterans of said units. Quality, reliability and depth vary a lot.

British and European copyright is for seventy years. I would expect a lot of out of copyright titles to appear on line for free in the next few years. Some probably already are.
