US 5th Army Liberating Rome Summer 1944 mistake or not?

Post by LAstryAGAIN » 23 Apr 2023 17:13

There has been critics of general Mark Clark decision cision to liberate Rome 6-6-1944 instead of using Allied resirces to cut off the German Armies North into defensive lines.
1) What was the strength of the US 5th Army and other allied Formations Summer 1944?
2) What was the strength of the German Armies retreating up the boot of Italy?
3) Were the Allies strong enough to cut off the German retreat,,,at the coast of very heavy casualites?
4) Has been argued that by leeting the german retreat north and then besige them that the Hitler was forced to send German formations to Keep Mussoli Republic in the war and could not spare them for the Berlin VS USSR Battle of Berlin 1945 {much the same way Germans in Norway or Denmark or the Netherlands were forced to fight/stay there 1944-1945 instead of Going to BerlIn?]
