Western Allies total casualties?

Post by Piotr Kapuscinski » 01 Nov 2023 22:57

What were the total casualties of the Western Allies on the Western Front in 1944-1945?
There are words which carry the presage of defeat. Defence is such a word. What is the result of an even victorious defence? The next attempt of imposing it to that weaker, defender. The attacker, despite temporary setback, feels the master of situation.

Thanks! But this is only about American casualties, right? I think this website has the same information:

The trend or numbers for losses from disease other non physical incapacitation is useful for studies like this. Even where they are not directly relevant to a analysis they provide a useful background or contrast to the examination of combat casualties.

Really surprised at the large number of American Army losses ie 523,117. They dwarf the British/Canadian losses of 185,538 for the same period.

Would it be fair to say that the British/Canadian losses mostly occured during the Caen and Arnhem battles? And the American losses from the Bulge and Hürtgen Forest battles? With the everyday 'wastage' making up the difference?

Because the US fielded much larger force eventually. Casualties of the 21 Army Group (British, Canadian and others) by periods were:

6-30.6.44 - 24,798
1.7-24.8.44 - 55,940
25.8.-30.9.44 - 29,864
1.10-10.11.44 - 27,663
11.11.44-10.3.45 - 31,066
23.3-5.5.45 - 25,135

For a total of 194,454 casualties. I wonder if a breakdown by months is available somehwere. In Normandy the proportion between US and British/Canadian etc casualties was about 3:2. Strarting from November 1944 and untill the crossing of the Rhine the 21 AG was only lightly engaged, whereas for the US army November, December and January were the heaviest months in terms of casualties suffered.
