Losses of Operation Market Garden?

#1

Post by Rommel8 » 04 Jan 2004, 06:49

I was wondering if anyone had a statistic for the number of dead, wounded and missing (if you only have dead, that is fine) for the II SS Panzer Corps and also the allied components

thanks in advance,
Rom

According to Kershaw It Never Snows In September German casualties between 17-26 September were:

In Arnhem-Oosterbeek: 2565 or 5175

In battles for Corridor: 3750

The Allied AB forces lost in same time 11850 men and XXX Corps 1480 men.

From Michael Reynolds book 'Sons of the Reich II SS Panzer Corps' it lists the following:

Airborne element
British 1st Airborne 1,446 Dead (inc 229 Glider Pilots), 6,414 Wounded & POW
Polish Indep Brigade 97 Dead & 111 Wounded & POW
US 82nd Airborne 215 Dead 790 Wounded & 427 Missing
US 101st Airborne 315 Dead 1,248 Wounded & 547 Missing
plus 122 US Glider pilots, of which 12 were killed

Land element
XXX Corps suffered 1,480 casualties
VIII & XII Corps suffered 3,847 casualties between them

German losses are stated at 6,400. He mentions that Kershaw breaks this down to being some 2,586 lost north of the lower Rhine, including 1,240 from the Hohenstaufen, whilst some 3,750 men were lost by the Germans fighting around the XXX Corps corridor, which includes 750 from Frundsberg

the Allies suffered some 17,059 battles losses (Dead, Wounded, Missing/POWs) against some 6,400 estimated German.
