Holland or other?

#1

Post by Thunder » 30 Jan 2004, 03:46

I'm unclear as to what the Netherlands were called during WWII. Some maps say Holland, others Netherlands. I can't get a straight answer from anyone. Which was it at this time???

Hello wombat_21!
the Netherlands is the kingdom and official name. Holland is unoffical and is merely the name of two provinces (Zuid-Holland, Noord Holland) the region is jointly called Holland also alot of the people tend to live there perhaps that is why people instinctivly call the Netherlands incorrectly Holland. Also In earlier times the Netherlands where also refered to the United Provinces. Hope that helps!

Hi,

Don't call a Limburger a Hollander. Also, don't call a Fries a Hollander.
A former Sergeant-Major of mine once called everybody who lived south of the rivers (Rijn and Maas) Belgen (belgians).

I am glad to see someone from the USA using the correct names for some of our provinces. Finally not someone who thinks Holland is the capital of Kopenhagen. :)

The Netherlands were once called the 7 provinces as well (way back).
Holland is the most used way to name my country.

The German army used Holland even in official documents. This is often re used in later works published.....

Maybe thats why you have seen it a few times

Ports and such

Thanks for the help! Does anyone know which ports were mainly used in the Netherlands? Where was the marshalling/building port for the "Sealion" Invasion? Which provinces would you consider the most valuable in WWII? Noord-Holland, Gelderland? Also, how important was the bridge (causeway? not sure) crossing the IJsselmeer? I appreciate any assistance...

With the inval in 1940 the Dutchmen fight very brave at the Moerdijkbrug (bridge over the IJselmeer) and even succeeded in destroying it.

The biggest port of the world is the harbour off rotterdam!, the most valuable province would be north and south holland, with the capital, the goverment center and most of the palaces!

Like The General pointed out, Noord- and Zuid Holland are the heart of the country and the defense of the country was based around them. As a result, the final and strongest defense line was created around them.
The bridge/dike crossing the IJsselmeer (the Afsluitdijk) was of big importance, because the Germans could use it to get inside Noord Holland and take the most important cities. It was an alternative approach from the spearhead in the South. Unfortunately for the Germans, they couldn't get through.
