Magyar in the West

Postby taltos » 03 Jul 2004 04:43

Hello everyone,

I was wondering if Hungarians fought in the West or agenst the western allies. I think I remember seeing this once before on the forum, but i cant find it anymore.

Thanks in advance,
John

The major units of the Hungarian army served on the Eastern Front or in Hungary.

As far as I am aware no major Hungarian unit had any contact with the Western allies until the very end of WW2 in Europe. Parts of the Hungarian 3rd army were captured in Austria by the Western Allies and 20th Infantry division and the Szt.-Laszlo division surrendered to the British in Carinthia.

The Hungarian Air Force fought the Western Allies in the defence of Hungary. The first air combat between the Hungarians and the Western Allies happened on 17/3/44 when the Hungarians lost 2 Bf 109. Allied raids were undertaken against various targets during April including factories in Budapest and at intervals during the rest of 1944.

see Hungarian Air Force G Punka squadron/signal for more details

I have heard that there were also a few Hungarian ground troops in Normandy opposing the Allies. My guess was they were ethnic Germans from Hungary who joined in the Wermacht, but I don't know about all the details.

This info was taken from Stephan Ambrose's Band of Brothers, the book. I will try to find the exct passage and page number if possible.

Other than that the only Hungarians that I knew that wre fighting in the west were the ones in the Allied armies, like my Grandpa, and a few airmen fighting for the Axis. I do not believe many major units were involved.

Hungarian Soldiers in Germany

Postby Géza Árbocz » 24 Jul 2004 00:52

I know from my father, that he was serving at the Honved military school at Koszeg and at january 1945 he moved with Hungarian troops to Germany, where he was aprisioned by american troops.
I believe it was not during any combat situation, but it indicates that some Hungarian troops were captured at Germany by American troops.
I'm still looking for details about his capture, if anyone can provide me with some information, I'll thank it.

Hi Taltos,
He was with the Hungarian Honvéd, who had moved to Germany from Koszeg some monthes before the Russian troops moved into this city.
