German PoW and Casualties in Normandy

#1

Post by RichTO90 » 25 Aug 2004, 19:12

To date I have found the following information regarding German prisoners as recorded by Allied forces in Normandy. These are from G-2 reports for the US 29th ID (1-31 July), US 90th ID (11 June-31 August), US XIX Corps (1-31 August), and Cdn II Corps (8-23 August). The total is 39,320 as follows:

29th ID – 705
90th ID – 11,790
XIX Corps – 9,627
II Corps – 17,198

In terms of origins reported, they are:

Unit PoW /MIA

Misc 4,490 /?
HQ Troops 815 /?
GHQ Artillery 322 /?
GHQ Werfer 234 /?
Total 39,320 /26,753

An additional 2,750 were reported captured by XIX Corps in July, but are not identified by unit. This total of 42,070 appears to account for 18.17 percent of the 231,523 reported captured by SHAEF through 31 August.

Please note that the reports for MIA are from varying periods of time as are the reports of PoW, but this at least does give an indication of probable losses. Sorry the formatting dropped out, I hope the table is somewhat understandable. Any comments, amendments or questions are welcome.

Rich,

Pardon my ignorance--so the MIA for German units are from German sources and hence would include those as Pows in the Allied figures?

Regards,
Peter

Exactly. Sorry, I may not have been clear. The German MIA are as reported in either the unit monthly or other periodic reports. The POW counts are from the identifications given in the various Allied G-2 Summaries that contain useful information.

Hi Rich

As usual, very interesting - thanks for sharing. Just one question:
49 SS-PzGBde
I think this is the first mention I have seen of such a unit. Was it a training unit, or an ad-hoc formation?

cheers

Hi Qvist,

IIRC there were at least three SS Brigaden engaged during the latter stages of the French Campaign, 49, 50 and 51? I believe that 49 and 51 were used to reconstitute 17 SS Panzergrenadier-Division.

Rich
