Vienna, 1945 questions

#1

Post by JD » 20 Nov 2004, 05:09

Hi everyone, I'm new around here and hopefully, I've put this topic in the right forum!

I have just returned from from Vienna and I wanted to know if anyone has any information, especially photographs of Vienna during 1945. When was it bombed? Who by? Apart from Schwechat Airport, what were the specific targets? Can anyone give me some idea of the troop movements around the city and when it fell? I know a bit about the way the city was split up into zones, in the same manner as Berlin and I have a good map of how it looked.

I would also appreciate any information anyone has on the reconstruction of this beautiful city.

Thanks,

JD

@JD

Thats a big theme. I try to give you a survey:
Groß-Wien (Great Vienna thats the area around Vienna like Schwecht) was bombed first times on 17.March 1944.
Aircraft factory Fischamend 12. April
Guntramsdorf 24. Mai
Liesing 29. Mai
Pottendorf 30. Mai
Oil raffinery Schwechat, Lobau, Kagran, Floridsdorf, Korneuburg and Vösendorf and Oil storage Prater 16. and 26. June and 8 and 27. July
Heidfeld near Schwechat 23. and 26. June
Zwölfaxing and Wr Neudorf (aircraftengines factory) 8.July

Vienna was bombed from 12.April 44 to 3. April 1945 52 times.
After this date the russian divebombers make their work. But not so effectiv as the US bomber did.
8770 civilian people died.
Approximatly 13% of Vienna was destroyed.

Vienna was bombed by the 15th USAAF from Italy.
The airport Schwechat was not a primary target. In 1944/45 it was a little airport.
The Vienna airport (like Schwechat today) was Asparn.

Are you comming to Vienna again?

Hello

Interesting tread. I would like to know - is there some / any photos from Vienna showing the Flak Towers, i mean war time or just after the war photos.

It would be much appreciated if anyone could direct me to web-site, references or post pictures here if possible.

( That goes for all the other Flak related things in and around Vienna or other large cities in Germany too. )

Another question - Floridsdorf ?? What was there, what was the target ??

Pics: http://pro.corbis.com/ - historic - search Vienna 45. But attention not all pics are really from Vienna. They are made from russian military photographers.

@kstdk
Floridsdorf: was (is) a part of Vienna. In WW2 there was a oil raffiniery and some other factorys like the lofag (greatest train factory).

Flak towers: there are a lot of pics in the www. Some are not to find easy because the are to find in forums.
Some examples:

Yeah, I know! Sorry about that. Thanks for your enlightening info though. Do you know if there's a book on the subject?

Almost certainly. Vienna is probably my favourite city in the world and I have been there many times. Unfortunately, this time I was just passing through on business so I didn't have any time to really do any research.

I understood Schwechat was a manufacturing base for Heinkel and that was why it was bombed. Do you know if this is correct?

@JD

1938: the area of Schwechat was part of the 23rd Vienna district.
14.Mai 1938: Reichsmahrschall Hermann Göring himself starts the construction works.
After the airport was finished there was the Jagdfliegerschule 5 (Fighter school) placed.
1942: parts of the Ernst-Heinkel Flugzeugwerken were placed in Schwechat too. New Aircraft were tested. At this time a 1500m long concrete runway was also built.
1945: the first flights of the Volksjäger He 162.
5.April 45: the Red Army captured Schwechat
24.July 45: french airforce and RAF assume the airport.

There are many books. But they are written in german language.

If you have nervertheless interest, i will send you a list of books.

btw there was another important,but older airport at Aspern (22st district) , which was later used by the russians.

the "Volksjäger" was also built at the Seegrotte at Hinterbrühl (24th district, now lower austria) , an old mine, were slave workers from mauthausen had to build them underground. They were brought out without the wings fixed through a 400 meter long, only 1,5 meter high tunnel.

Asparn was the Vienna civilian airport also military used. As i have written Schwechat was built from 1938 to 1942. Asparns history goes back to 1912.
The most important military airport was Straßhof. It was the biggest airfield with a concret runway. Today you can see a great part of the runway and some "Splitterschutzboxen" for planes.

There also was a lot of other airfields around vienna (Seyring, Ebergassing,........).

Not to forget Tulln Airbase used as central airport of th US forces after the war.

I remember a famous picture of a sign based near the american base, showing what the cousins from US thought about the old world:

WARNING! UNEXPERIENCED NATIVE DRIVERS AHEAD! :D

Thats only restricted correct.
Thats only correct from 24.7.45 to 30.9.55 and only because at this time Tulln Airbase (Langenlebarn) was offical the Vienna Airport. But it was not on Vienna territory.
