US 2nd Infantry Division in the battle of the bulge
I read on wikipedia about the battle of the bulge "Waffen SS attacks in the north fared againist the US 2nd Infantry Division." Why did they fare badly? What SS Division(s) was/were in the north anyway? I don't know much about it other than what the web site said.

The 2nd Infantry was a problem to the attacking german units (12th SS Pz division, 277th Volksgrenadier division and 12th Volksgrenadier division) because they didn't expect it. It had been moved to the area just days earlier to take part in an American offensive, together with 99th infantry division, to swing south around Monschau and take the Siegfried line there. Thus, a base would be formed to attack the Ruhr dams (which had failed in th Hurtgenwald).
2nd Infantry was just about the only fresh, experienced division on the whole front of German offensive. Naturally, it presented a big problem. Its neat positioning atop the Elsenborn ridge didn't help the Germans much either.
