Hi Tiki!

Only sPzAbt.503 had King Tigers in Normandy. I think you will find the picture of the described action in one of Michael Kenny's great replies in Equipment sector

Mark V,
According to Timo(in my opinion, one of the best LSSAH expert),SS-101/501 had some King Tigers in France,1944.

Yep Tolga is right,

the 1st co. of the sSS-Pz.Abt.101 was equipped with TigerII´s in the end of the Normandy-campaign!!!
I dont know if they saw any action!

But the photo that Michael Kenny posted on the forum
Image

describes in my opinion exactly the action of the irish tankdriver!!!!
Many thanks Mark V for your help

TiKi

Very risky, I might add. The Tiger II was able to turn its turret 360 degrees in just 9 seconds at max. RPM, so a maximum of 4.5 seconds would be needed to turn the turret against the Allied tank. (This is not a very long time - a Sherman could reach on 50-100 metres in this time, at maximum speed...

Also, the article mentions that the 88 was a Fla.K., which it wasn't ;)

No doubt it was a Tiger of (Heeres) schwere Panzer Abteilung 503 - from the 1st Company.
The 1./s.Pz.Abt. 503 was the firstto be issued the Kingtigers.

The account from the Kingtiger commander is in the 503 history.
You have to read both accounts to discern the truth...

When it first went to Normandy in July 503 had 12 Tiger II (p) in the 1st Company. In August the 3rd Company was given 14 Tiger II (p) and again served in 'Normandy'. 24 of these Tigers were lost and only 2 were saved. SS 101 had no Tiger IIs when first committed to Normandy but in August the 1st Company was given 14 Tiger IIs (h) and again fought in 'Normandy', only one Tiger made it back out of 14. After this both 503 and 101(501) were fully equipped with 45 Tiger IIs(h) each. So if it is a Porsche turret it must be 503 (or (fkl)316 who also had 5 Tiger II(p)). If it is a production turret it must be SS 101. By Normandy I mean the battles up to and including the Seine crossing in August. If you mean Normandy as the area as defined on a map then really only 503(p) Tigers served there.

Sherman/Tiger II picture

TiKi - is this a fair dinkum battle photo or David's memento of Goliath? The news item clearly stated that the Sherman hit the r.h. rear of the German monster - of course the negative could've been upsided - but I cant see any of the damage caused by the intrepid Irish 75mm shell? Or could Paddy's advanced years perhaps have clouded his memory?

Now I'm really confused. Several months ago I posted a question on King Tigers in Normandy and I've got the answer that only 503 had them (I think it was you, Michael).
I would be really grateful if someone could give me some details on actions of 101 King Tigers in Normandy.

Mark

Mark, the key here is how you define Normandy.

The only PzVIBs in Normandie (the French region) belonged to 1./sPzAbt 503.

The PzVIBs from sSSPzAbt 101 were committed from mid-August (could be wrong there, please correct if that's the case!) during the retreat towards the Seine crossings. So whilst a part of the Normandy campaign (if the liberation of Paris is used as the final date for that campaign) they didn't fight in Normandie proper (or only in the Eastern most parts).

Kind rgds
Nick

Typical of an Irishman to crash into the biggest thing in the field.

Thanks Nicklas!

Just what I thought, sSSPzAbt.101 had King Tigers in France but not in Normandy.
