Battle for Oposhnja

#1

Post by Steve E » 06 Apr 2018, 05:11

On September, 14 the Soviet army went on the offensive in the small city of Oposhnja, 41 km north of Poltawa, Ukraine.
Oposhnja was defended by the 2nd Battalion of the 7th Panzer Division.
My father was a member of the 5th Company and was killed during the action. His body was never recovered and he has no grave.
I have a letter from one of his comrades send to my mother which reads in part:

On the morning of the 14th our Battalion, together with a Battalion from the Grossdeutschland Division, were ordered to occupy Oposhnja until our left neighbor cold be extracted from a critical situation. Because of the Soviet armies vast superior strength this could not be accomplished and
Grossdeutschland was pulled out and moved to support our neighbor on the left.
Now our situation was hopeless. We had to defend our position and fought desperately.
I spoke to Otto (My father) at about 10 o"clock in the morning and asked him what was happening. He said " The Russians are 20 meters from our position".About half an hour later the soviets attacked and we had to retreat from our position.
At that moment I saw Otto and his platoon leader sprint across the street, they were the last to retreat from our position. I took shelter in a nearby house. The platoon leader turned up a short time later and I asked him where is Otto and he answered very subdued "he was shot in the head and killed, he is lying in the street". We immediately tried to recover his body but it was impossible to get to him. Just then his platoon leader was killed as well.

This letter was written about three month after the action.

I wonder if there is any information on this incident available, i.e. which unit of Grossdeutschland was involved, anything from the 7thPanzer Division or any documentation from the Soviet records, which Soviet units were involved or anything else of interest.

I and my family would be eternally grateful for any information.
With best regards
Steve Eckardt.

There are several pages of Soviet documents from fighting for Oposhnja.
20th Guards Rifle Corps from 4th Guards Army was involved.
Some examples:

Hi GregSingh,
Do you have anything on the Grossdeutschland Battalion? I have searched but can't find anything. Their involvement was probably to insignificant to get a mention in the literature.
About the Russian links, they are all Russian to me, I can't read it and the translator won't work.
Regards Steve.

Unfortunately there are no NARA rolls for this unit past June 1943, as far as I can see.
Perhaps Bundesarchiv-Militärarchiv has something. Also you may try divisional history books.
These would be in German.

Unfortunately my Russian language skills are non-existent.Is there anyone able to translate anything relevant to the fighting in Oposhnja in the references given by GregSingh ?

https://pamyat-naroda.ru/documents/view/?id=110830952
https://pamyat-naroda.ru/documents/view/?id=110946607
https://pamyat-naroda.ru/documents/view/?id=2600562

I would dearly like to find out more about the fighting there since the information I have is very sketchy and it seems there is nothing on the German side that even mentions this apparent sideshow which took my fathers life.

Hoping that someone can help even a little,
with kind regards
Steve Eckardt.

This map shows Soviet units at regiment level and approximate front line at the end of 13th of September.
232 Guards Rifle Regiment (from 80th Guards Rifle Division) was in the western outskirts, 25 RR between school and church, 22 RR between church and area of hill 184.8, 27 RR in the east, covering up to the river.

25, 22 and 27 were also called Guards airborne regiments in some documents, as their parent unit was 8th Guards Airborne Division.

Fighting on the 14th for the southern part of the village appears to be heavy. 8th Guards Airborne Division reported 40 killed and 233 wounded on that day. On the day before - 13th - only 11 killed and 33 wounded.

Do you know which part of the village 5th company was defending?

Thank you Greg, this gives me some idea but the letter is the only information I have.
As I said before, the soldier who wrote the letter was KIA in 1944 and we never got in touch with him again.

Hello!

The overall situation on early 14th from the A.O.K. 8 point of view. As you can see Oposchnja was right on the border between Pz.Gren.Div. Großdeutschland an 7. Pz.Div.

Hello!

Some tidbits from the war diary of XXXXVIII. Pz.Korps. [NARA T314 R1170 49011/3]. It seems your fathers unit was a part of Eingreifgruppe/Kampfgruppe Gläsemer [Wolfgang Glaesemer was the cdr. of Pz.Gren.Rgt. 6]:

11.9.1943
[...]
[...]
Auf Entscheid der Heeresgruppe wird 18.00 Uhr die Eingreifgruppe der 8.Armee (Kampfgruppe Glaesemer, bestehend aus einer schwachen A.A. mit einer SPW Gruppe, 1 Sturmgesch,Abt. und 1 le.F.H.Abt.) dem Korps unterstellt. Die Gruppe darf nur südl. Oposchnja zum Einsatz gelangen.
[...]

[...]

Besten Dank Dirk,
I have now a fairly good idea of the situation in Oposhnja and it pretty well confirms the letter from my dad's comrade.
What are your sources ?
Thanks again, your effort is much appreciated.
