Questions on some battles in 1941

Post by Kelvin » 03 Aug 2018 08:03

Hi, Book the battle for Leningrad" mentions German 28th Armeekorps destroyed Soviet 8th Army in late Aug until 9th Sep, capturing 9,774 Soviet POW.

And in mid August, 28th Armeekorps captured 16,000 Soviet POW near Shimsk,

Exactly what these two battles ? any more data ? Thank

8 Army was in Estonia. I guess, you should read "48" instead of "8".

Not sure what the Shimsk battle is exactly. I guess, it is all about a general attack on Leningrad which started in mid-August, and of which I and XXVIII Corps made the right pincer. I didn't look into details, sorry.

HI, Art, they called Shimsk pocket on 12th August 1941 in one website, I cannot find anything else from other area.

In Jamese Lucas book The German soldier in the Eastern front its map about German encirclement campaign map mentions about 250,000 Soviet solders taken near Luga, I guess maybe a dozen or over battles in this area in Aug-Sept 1941. But no detail I find any.

I doubt that it was true, given that the entire Army Group north captured less than 400 000 prisoners by the end of 1941:

In any case the August attack seemed to break the 48 Army into several pieces with heavy casualties. However, it doesn't seem that any large pocket was formed. There was a German after-action report related to this operation on germandocsinrussia, I can't remember where exactly right now.

Hi, Art, I read that book in 1995 but by now, I also feel this book has some inflated figures. e.g. Its map shows Nikolayev in Aug 1941 contained 60,000 Soviet POW, I think now it is untrue.
