6th Army Casualties in Stalingrad before Operation Uranus

Post by Adonnus » 22 Nov 2020 12:49

Hello. Do we have any numbers on 6th Army casualties during the actual fighting in the city itself and before Operation Uranus? I vaguely remember seeing one years ago which stated the number of 6th Army killed there as something like 6,000. Don't quote me on those numbers. I am wondering how brutal and bloody the pre-encirclement combat really was for the Germans.

According to ten-days reports by the medical channel the 6 Army lost from 11.9 to 20.11.1942 8683 men killed, 30 664 wounded, 1427 missing, total 40 774 combat casualties - in good accord with the numbers given above. Total casualties from the start of the battle of Stalingrad (20 July) were about 85 000. To this losses of the 4 Panzer Army should also be added.

Quoting from my book - The 64th Army at Stalingrad, on page 176

16 November 1942
The German 6th Army HQ reported to higher headquarters (Army Group B) that between 13 September and 14 November (three months) the 6th Army had suffered the following casualties:
• 7,487 men killed
• 30,313 wounded
• 1,081 missing in action
For a total of 38,881 casualties.

The source, Maclean, French L. Stalingrad, The Death of the German Sixth Army on the Volga, 1942-1943 Vol 2, Schiffer, 2013, p. 60.

So this information is in line with the other sources.
