Lissitschansk - where is it?

Post by Wolf » 21 Jan 2007 15:32

Been reading Bittere Pflicht by Jochen Löser.

At the end of 1941 the 76. Infanterie-Division advanced on Lissitschansk - now I can't for the life of me locate this place - anybody know of other spellings of this place or if it has had a namechange post-WWII...?

I need it to locate, if possible, a number of smaller villages like Fjodorowka, Warwarowka, Peresjesdnaja, Alexandrowka-Iwanodarjewka, Nikolajewka and the "Deutsche Dorf" (Berestowaja).

Lisichansk now is a ukrainian town. It is located in 90 km from Lugansk on a river Severskiy Donets. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lysychansk for details.

... Warwarowka, ...
This town should be in fact Varvarovka, but which one?

Google Maps has quite a list of towns with this same name:

Varvarovka(s)

I'd choose one of these two:

Varvarovka, Belgorodskaya Russia

or

Varvarovka, Voronezhskaya Russia

Probably the other towns of your list are not so far from these two, so this may help you in finding them.

Good hunt :D

I've a lot of Warwarowka throug google. As far as I can tell it's a town in the Ukrain.

See the following:
So Varvarovka and Kharkov are Warwarowka and Charkov. As for your list ... Warwarowka is 93 km SW of Kharkov Ugrim is in the NW part of Kharkov ...

Hello! I'm Flemish and specialized as multilingual (also fluent in Russian) guide on the Eastern Front - Abschnitt Heeresgruppe Süd. For my studies of Historical Topography, I set up and keep a database of already more than 700 locations on the territory of Ukraine (which covers almost the complete action territory of H.Gr. Süd from 1941 - 1944). In my database (will be available later) I keep the German transcription (with MANY errors and mistakes), the original name in Russian, tha ACTUAL name in Russian (some towns and villages changed names after 1945), the map sheet number (1:100.000), the actual map sheet number (of the newly edited 1:100.000 maps by the Ukrainian Geographic Institute), its coordinates on the old map and evt. remarks (e.g. the source [KTB, memories, etc.] or the map and or scheme where I found it).

I have this coplete area in older as well as in actual maps of a scale of 1:100.000 and 1:200.000.

So - the town you're interested in is "Лисичанск" - located on the 1:100.000 map N° M-037-113 in the coordinates 58/18 - its lat-long coordinates (Google Earth etc) are: 48° 55′ 12″ N, 38° 25′ 12″ E.

If interested, I can mail you the map sheet M-037-113. The town of Lissitschansk is located in the Lugansk area, near Severodonetsk.

If anybody seeks for another location; always welcome as long it is located in the area of H.Gr. Süd or its adjacent territory.

I am every month on the Battlefields of the Eastern Front - Abschnitt Heeresgruppe Süd on guided Tours and Photo Tours - soon I'll also publish panoramas of the Battlefields of different Front Operations; from the German as well from the Soviet point of view.

Stay tuned! Best wishes - Martin

Berestowaja is in fact in Russian "Berestovoe" and is a real tiny village to the South of the town Lozovaia - it is located on Map sheet (1:100.000) M-37-109 - coordinates 04/14 on that map.

Also in the area of H.Gr. Süd.

The question "Fjedorowka" is a more complicated one... this name is very popular and can be found in different areas. In my Topo Database are already FOUR different ones:

- Fedorowka - 1:100.000 Map Sheet N°: M-35-047;
- Fedorowka - 1:100.000 Map Sheet N°: M-35-072;
- Fedorowka - 1:100.000 Map Sheet N°: M-36-084; and
- Fedorowka - 1:100.000 Map Sheet N°: M-36-125

So - I should know a bit more (a scheme, a map drawing, a route followed or another town in the vicinity...)!

Best Wishes - Martin

Nikolajewka is also another question - need more context because:

Nikolajewka (now called "Berezhinka") - located on (1:100.000) Map Sheet N° M-36-126 - coordinates 66/62.
Nikolajewka - ocated on (1:100.000) Map Sheet N° M-36-138 - coordinates 64/52.

Also: Heeresgruppe Süd.

Iwanodarjewka is not yet in my Topo-Project Database. So i will plot all above mentioned villages - draw a line through them all and scan this "route" and its direct areas. As all the given names are about in the same area and all in Heeresgruppe Süd, I'll guess I'll find it also. Keep tuned!

Best wishes - Martin - Topo-Project / H.Gr. Süd

In Google Maps 48.769258 38.071489:
Федоровка / Fjodorowka (from russian) / Fedorivka (from ukrainian),
Переездная / Peresjesdnaja / Pereizne

48.792277 38.266068:
Иванодарьевка / Iwanodarjewka / Ivano-darivka
Николаевка / Nikolajewka / Mikolaivka
Берестовая / Berestowaja / Berestove

Lissitschansk - 25-30 km in ost
