Deployment of 2nd and 5th Panzer in September 1941: how?
I have been trying to find out how 2nd and 5th Panzer divisions were deployed to AG-Center in September 1941 for Operation Typhoon. It seems like they would have used at least 40 trains each to deploy, which would have been catastrophic to the limited rail supply system, which was only doing about 29 trains per day maximum, which was barely covering needs for day to day use and stockpiling for the offensive. So how did they deploy East? Use the torn up road system? If so what impact did that have on their equipment?

Check out roll T315 R91 for 2.PzD
It took 79 trains to move that unit from France to Grodno. As far as I can read it moved then by roads from Grodno (starting on 22.Sep)
Plenty of pages outlining routes/timing, etc. in that roll.

You mean even tracked vehicles? I didn't realize German transportation situation was that bad.GregSingh wrote: As far as I can read it moved then by roads from Grodno (starting on 22.Sep)

How many trains would shipping the tracked vehicles have taken? At that time they were getting fewer than the AG-Center assessed minimum necessary trains to Smolensk just for supply.Art wrote:You mean even tracked vehicles?
