Rshew/Rzhev Battles -- November 1942

Post by riffraff » 11 May 2019 13:47

Researching a relative who was KIA in November 27, 1942 at Fedjajkowo and buried at Kriegsgrab Rakitino/Rshew.

I know there was a wartime Wehrmacht cemetary at Rshew. I have a photo of it. There is a modern war cemetary in the same area from the 1990s with an adjacent cemetary for Soviet dead.

My question: is anyone familiar with the battle area? I can find German wartime maps on mapster showing Rshew and the surrounding area. I can't find Fedjajkowo. For the Rshew maps, they have versions from 1940, 42, and 1943 and you can see some towns are already omitted (presumed destroyed during those years).

I'm working on the premise that Fedjajkowo is reasonably close to Rshew if a body was transported there for burial?

I found Rakitino at the very bottom-right of the X-57 map from 1942. Rshew is just north of it

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Hello

did you check this :

http://www.wwii-photos-maps.com/prewarmapso36-1-25000/

you need the map O-36-141-D-C,.jpg
Then go on this map to the lower edge, at the railway line to Wjasma lies the place you are looking for.

Riffraf, do you have the Y57 Kalinin Map as well?
Im hoping the Town of Polunino is on it, which is north of Rzhev and slightly to the east.

riffraff-

The "Fedjajkowo" on the map UlrichH mentioned probably isnt the location of your relatives death as it is 75km from Rshew and 50km from the reported burial location Rakitino, which would be extremely unlikely they would have transported a body that distance. Have you contacted the Volksbund or WASt for any additional details? Also, I have been helping the Volksbund in recovery efforts of "lost" Heldenfiedhofs in the east since 2007 with aerial photos, if you can pin point the area I can check to see if there are any air photos from the war over the location for you.
