Battle of Berlin account?

Post by Berto » 20 Jul 2019 22:03

Are there any first-hand accounts from German survivors of the battle of Berlin, about the battle itself and the subsequent captivity in the USSR? I am looking for such accounts, possibly from rank and file soldiers, rather than officers.

I know of one written by a guy named Helmut Altner called "Berlin Dance of Death", its been a while since I have read it but it is a 17 year old German soldier's account of March - May 1945 in the city. Some more which are histories and/or firsthand accounts:

Armored Battles of the Waffen SS 1943-45- (history)
Twilight of The Gods- (firsthand account)
The Fall of Berlin- (history)

This last one is not as good as the others but it still has some info, but I wouldn't recommend it if you have a choice between this or any of the four above that I listed.

Eastern Front Combat, chapters 3,5, and 6- (firsthand account)

if you need more there are plenty of books that have been written
