The famous scene of an unknown soldier -film, in which Rokka kills about 50 enemies, was based on a true combat during which Viljam Pylkäs killed 83 enemy soldiers in Pertjärvi in the Upper Syväri/Svir-river using Suomi-submachine gun . The front line there consisted of individual strongpoints and dense forest between them. At the beginning of April, the Soviets fiercely attacked the Finnish front line. After repelling an attack on his own position with his machine gun, Pylkäs was ordered by his platoon leader Einari Kokkonen to go to help the soldiers of the neighboring regiment.
Pylkäs took soldier Kärkkäinen with him. Using short lunges over snowy terrain, Pylkäs and Kärkkäinen made their way to the JR 61's extreme strongpoint. At this point, the attacking Soviets had to wade up the slope in deep snow. Pylkäs received a Suomi submachine gun from the soldiers of the JR 61, and several spare magazines were given to Kärkkäinen. They rushed to the most forward nest. Hundreds of Soviets were attacking up the slope. Pylkäs emptied the first 40 round magazine. However, the attackers moved furiously forward. Pylkäs emptied a magazine after magazine. The soldiers behind began to bring more smg magazines to Kärkkäinen, who in turn gave them to Pylkäs.
Then Pylkäs was hit by a Soviet bullet that scratched a long wound on top of his head, and a lot of blood was spilled. Kärkkäinen was about to retreat now, but Pylkäs only urged him to continue filling the magazines. The submachine gun also malfunctioned, but by then the Soviets were already retreating. The submachine gun barrel had overheated and caused the malfunction, but it was replaced and Pylkäs continued firing.
In total, Viljam Pylkäs emptied 17 magazines, 680 cartridges. During the battle, he shot 83 enemies, the number was confirmed when the area front of the position was examined after the battle.
