Researching soldier died in Zagreb, Croatia 1945

Hello,

I'm researching a distant relative who died in Zagreb, Croatia in 1945. I'd like to try and find out what unit he was in and some idea of the circumstances if possible. Is anyone able to help, or does anyone know where I can write to in order to get some more information?

If it helps, his details are:
Heinrich GOLDBAUM. Died 15th April 1945 in Zagreb.

Many thanks.

Hello there and :welcome:

Whilst I am unsure of how to specifically check for your lost relative, the cemetery in Zagreb for the WW2 & NDH period is called Mirogoj.

May your search be successful!

You could also try Arhiv Hrvarska on the Sava Cesta in Zagreb. But you should be cautioned: just having his name may not be enough. You should have his Date of Birth as well, and the identity of which military he was in: (1) the German Wehrmacht, or, (2) the Croatian Armed Forces (Hrv. Snaga or Domobranstvo). His last name - GOLDBAUM - gives rise to some question marks, of course. The Holocaust was pretty thorough in Croatia.

Volksbund has some of that information.
