What were Soviet casualties against the German 6th Army after its encirclement at Stalingrad??

Post by Sid Guttridge » 26 Jul 2022 06:54

The Red Army chose to simply blockade 6th Army for some seven weeks after its encirclement at Stalingrad and then destroyed it in some three weeks of attacks.

Do we know what Soviet losses against 6th Army were during these two phases?

Many thanks,

Sid.

Hi Sid,

here a typical German "statistic":

Battle of Stalingrad casualties by war party from August 23, 1942 to February 02, 1943
Link: https://de.statista.com/statistik/daten ... %20getötet.

It's pretty pathetic, but what you can find so quickly on the internet...

I don't think so. There were several abortive attempts to reduce the pocket in November-early December 1942 and some local fighting on the perimeter thereafter. Another operation was to start in mid-December but was postponed several times, first due to unexpected relief attempt (aka operation Wintergewitter) and then due to logistical problems. In other words the Soviet command didn't intend to allow the pocket to survive for so much time, rather it was an unpleasant reality they had to swallow.
