StuGs at Stalingrad

Post by Colonel Chabert » 29 Apr 2023 10:49

Hello all,

Does anyone have a breakdown of the different models of StuG used by the various battalions in the Stalingrad campaign?

I think the units involved were StuG Abt 177, 191, 243, 244 and 245.

From the photos I have seen there seem to be a lot of the short barreled models (particularly the Ausf B) and a smaller number of long-barreled Ausf Fs but I don't know whether every battalion had this mixture. For example I read somewhere that in the case of Abt 243 one of its batteries (the 2nd I think) avoided being trapped in the pocket because it had been sent to the rear to pick up a consignment of new Ausf Fs but I haven't seen any info on whether the other two batteries already had some long-barreled vehicles or whether they were still equipped only with the older models.

Thanks in advance for any replies.

Le Colonel

Sitatuion as of mid-November 1942:
177 Abt. - 8 StuG III lg and 2 Stug III kz operaional
243 Abt. - 7 StuG III lg operational
244 Abt. - 7 StuG III lg and 7 StuG III kz and 4 sIG (sfl) operational
245 Abt. - 7 StuG III lg operational, also StuG III kz and sIG (sfl) in repair

Worth to pay attention to self-propelled infantry howitzers shipped to these units.

Hello, Art, may I ask AFV strength of Panzerjager abteilung 521 and 670 in mid nov 1942 ? I only know 521 possibly still had VK3001 Sturer Emil and PzIVa Dicker Max.
