British 7th Armored Division - 1943 Battle Lessons Report

#1

The attached report 'Battle Lessons From A British Armored Division' was prepared by the British 7th Armored Division in 1943. The report discusses the unit’s actions in North Africa and Italy and includes recommendations for future action and discussion of lessons learned. The copy scanned here was sent to the US Army in late 1943.

Two items of interest are the recommendations for use of armored personnel carriers for safe transport of infantry and several recommendations for further development of tanks and other weapons.

This report is presented in 7 sections due to the need to maintain the attachment file size within this site's system requirements. The last page of the original has poor quality and cannot be read.

Thank you. QWuite a loot of food for thought there. A quick read suggests this might challenge the accepted view that the 7th Armoured Division were shocked by the close terrain of Normandy. Someone had drawn sensible conclusions from Italy, including the need for mixed armour and infantry in brigades and the implications for manouvre.
