Italian submarines

#1

Post by Wargames » 09 Jan 2023, 09:25

I have been trying to get the number of Italian submarines at the start of WW2 to add up to 117 boats as is often given. I come up seven boats short. Here is my math:

32 ocean going boats, 70 coastal submarines, and 8 "H" class boats. Total, 110 boats.

The 70 coastal boats are:

4 Pisani class
4 Mamelli class
2 Bragadin class
4 Bandiera class
4 Squalo class
2 Settembini class
7 Argonauta class
12 Sirena class
10 Perla class
17 Adua class
2 Micca class
2 Focca class
____
70 boats

What am I missing?

If your source tells you that there were two Miccas which were coastal boats, I wouldn't care too much for the source, given that there was only one and it was a long-range mine-layer transport.

The enemy had superiority in numbers, his tanks were more heavily armoured, they had larger calibre guns with nearly twice the effective range of ours, and their telescopes were superior. 5 RTR 19/11/41

Two things:
1) the link is to the wrong "Micca" Class ( the 1915 class, not the 1935 submarine)

2) One listing that comes to 117. It may or may not include a Marconi class on final trials.

TYPE CLASS 1/1/1940 to June 1940 Total

Thanks, copy-paste failure, now fixed.

You are also wrong on the H class submarines. There were just five by the start of World War II. H 1, H 2, H 4, H 6, H 8.

Cesco:

Five is the correct number and is so reflected in the table. The right number is the total of the named class in June 1940.

The table lost some clarity when copied into the message for the Forum. The column headings are TYPE, CLASS, 1/1/1940, to June 1940, Total
This is designed to show the increase from January to June 1940. However, the table as shown on the table doesn't clearly reflect the blank spaces where there were no changes between January & June.

The TYPE, CLASS, 1/1/1940, to June 1940, Total for the H Class is : Coastal, H, 5,blank,5

Think he refers to OP who has 8xH class
