Any of you guys aware of any German military units, ships, submarines or planes in the Italian colony of north east Africa, Eritrea?? I am Eritrean and read in some local newspapers some years back that during the African campaign Rommel used to have an Eritrean 'Ascari' as his personal and trusted servant? is it true?? ..

The Compagnia Autocarrata Tedesca fought in Italian East Africa. In Massaua there were these German cargo ships (info from: http://www.feldgrau.net/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=10665):

Gera, 5163
there was the tug Kionga too (192 grt) which had been able to force the British blockade at the Bab el Mandeb strait in Feb. 1941 coming from Chisimaio, Somalialand, and who had been able, before, to flee just before the war from Zanzibar to Chisimaio under the nose of the British East Indies Squadron.
No German airplanes or submarines were based in Italian East Africa.
