From http://mailer.fsu.edu/~akirk/tanks/croatia/croatia.html
It`s look like croatian troops had better tanks than germans.

Trieste 1943=1945

Post by ehlerner » 28 Aug 2005 19:45

I've been researching Globocnik for 20 years and have almost finished writing a movie script on the subject.
Pease help me with info & pictures re. Trieste, 1943-1945, specifically:
Globocnik's residence @ villa di angelo ara
rainer's residence @ villa modiano

or anything you think might be helpful.

Thanks very much.

New stuff from old books-first few deal with atmosphere in Jajce in 1943,during the II AVNOJ meeting (from "25godina AVNOJ-a,1943-1968".

Koca Popovic was one the best partisan commanders of the war. Born in a wealthy Belgrade merchant family,he studied at Sorbonne. He accepted Marxsism early as he moved in leftist circles of poets and artists.Joined the KPY in 1933,he fought in Spain as a volunteer and a liutenant of the artillery. At the beginning of the uprising,he rose quickly trough the ranks. He was the first commander of the famous First Proleterian Brigade and of the 1.Proleterian division. His decision to make a breaktrough at Zelengora may have well saved the partisans during the "Unternehmen Schwarz" in June 1943.Later commanded a corps, than an army. After the war he served as a Chief of the General staff of YPLA,Yugoslav ambassador to UN and finaly vice-president of SFRY.
Following photos were taken from the compilation of his war diaries, documents and reflections ("Koca Popovic: Zabeleske uz ratovanje",Beograd 1988).

I did quite some scaning while at home-another three photos coming up:

1. Major Strecker with his captors- his exchange would prompt "March negotiations" in March 1943. ("40 godina na celu SKJ")
2.Gebirgsjäger of the 1. Mountain division in Montenegro,1943.
3.Germans burning villages around Glamoc,Bosnia. (Nr. 2 and 3 taken from "25 godina AVNOJ-a,1943-1968")

First one is my favourite-Partisans on the main street of Sarajevo on 6.April 1945. The street was renamed in 1945. and the name stuck to this day: Ulica Marsala Tita (Photo from "40 godina na celu SKJ")

Next two are from "25 godina AVNOJ-a,1943-1968": Volodja Smirov, chief engineer of the Supreme Staff during the "Operation Weiss"-immortalized by Yul Bryner in the film "Bitka na Neretvi" (almost everybody born and raised in ex-Yu saw the film).

Tito's order dated 3. February 1943: "Wounded must not be left behind..."
