Koca Popovic was one the best partisan commanders of the war. Born in a wealthy Belgrade merchant family,he studied at Sorbonne. He accepted Marxsism early as he moved in leftist circles of poets and artists.Joined the KPY in 1933,he fought in Spain as a volunteer and a liutenant of the artillery. At the beginning of the uprising,he rose quickly trough the ranks. He was the first commander of the famous First Proleterian Brigade and of the 1.Proleterian division. His decision to make a breaktrough at Zelengora may have well saved the partisans during the "Unternehmen Schwarz" in June 1943.Later commanded a corps, than an army. After the war he served as a Chief of the General staff of YPLA,Yugoslav ambassador to UN and finaly vice-president of SFRY.
Following photos were taken from the compilation of his war diaries, documents and reflections ("Koca Popovic: Zabeleske uz ratovanje",Beograd 1988).
