Though we all know about Rhodes,Leros,Kos,Kephalonia etc etc had Italian Garrisons. Were all the Greek islands garrisoned by the Italians?

"All" I don't know but a lot of is sure. There were many little garrisons of few men each (ok perhaps the five men garrison of Mediterraneo movie is exaggerated but...not so much). For example, is really fun the description of G. Baldi about the life of italian garrison of Scarpanto fromed only by an infantry company and an artillery battery in 1941....

Andy,

Although pretty general in nature, here’s some information from my notes RE Italian forces in the Aegean area at the time of Italy’s surrender. Additions/corrections are most welcome!

The Italian General Headquarters Aegean based on Rhodes controlled the Italian forces garrisoning the Dodecanese, Cyclades and other Aegean islands. It was subordinated to Army Group E for tactical purposes.

General Headquarters Aegean: Ammiraglio Inigo Campioni (also Governor of Rhodes)
• Italian 50th Regina Infantry Division and the Artillery/Naval Group: Generale di Divisione Michele Scariona (Headquartered on Rhodes with elements also garrisoning Kos and Leros and other islands.)
• Italian 6th Cuneo Infantry Division: Generale di Divisione Mario Soldarelli (Headquartered on Samos with elements also garrisoning the islands of Naxos, Ikaria, Syros, Andros, and Santorini.)

Additionally, the Italian 51st Sienna Infantry Division (Generale di Divisione Angelico Carta) was based on Crete under control of the German fortress commandant.

Best regards,
Shawn

Hmmm. There was one on Castelarossa. I think the SBS may have taken it and then the Italians or the Germans may have taken it back. Have to refresh my memory on that one...

Doesn't look like you ever got to finish that thread, Lupo. Reminds me of some of my own efforts.
