That's what had me confused. You see, that is more like the third battle for Tobruk. The first was when the British took it from the Italians in early 1941. The second was the months-long siege in 1941 when the Axis couldn't take it and the British couldn't relieve it. This involved a series of small battles over several months and culminated in the breakout battle during Operation Crusader when Tobruk was finally relieved.amon-gang wrote:the 2nd battle of Tobruk on june 1942 , after the battle of Gazala Line begin May 26 1942
The third battle was when Rommel was finally able to take the fortress/port and after which he held it for a few months before finally being forced back all the way to Tunisia after the Second Battle of el Alamein.
I will be back later with some information on which units were involved in the battle you are interested in, if nobody else beats me to it.
And some not so small, and depending on how you count it could push the May 42 battle up to the 5th, 6th, or 7th Battle for Tobruk.Grease_Spot wrote:That's what had me confused. Well...sort of. There were a whole bunch of fights in July that collectively are called the First Battle. Then the second battle (in September) is not called the Second Battle of el Alamein, but the Battle of Alam Halfa. It's the next big battle that began in October that is called the Second. Is everybody confused yet? Whew! (And what's an Israeli airline that hadn't even been formed yet have to do with it?)Which was really the Third Battle of El Al... after the Second Battle of el Alamein.

Anyway, getting back to a-g's original question (I think)...
In June, 1942, Tobruk was defended by the 2nd. South African Division having under command, in addition to its own 4th. and 6th. Brigades, also the 32nd. Army Tank Brigade, the 201st. Guards Brigade, and the 11th. Indian Brigade, plus odds and ends of this and that. Most of these units were, I believe, at reduced strength due to previous fighting.
The Axis attacking forces consisted of the 15th. and 21st. German Panzer Divisions and the Trieste Motorized Division and Ariete Armored Division of the Italians. These units were also reduced by previous fighting. They attacked the southeast corner of the perimeter manned by the 2/5 Mahratta Rifles and by 1430 hours had penetrated to King's Cross at the center of the fortress; by 1600 hours to the landing ground; and by 1900 hours to the town and harbor.
Hope this helps.
