Israeli Army Uniforms - 1940s and 1950s.

Post by sylvieK4 » 23 Jan 2010 15:13

Can anyone recommend any good, illustrated books or online web pages detailing Israeli Army uniforms from 1948-1959? Also, if anyone has any photographs (or other illustrations) showing men's and women's IDF uniforms from this period, would you please post them here?

Here are a few examples I've found thus far. If anyone has any more illustrations or detailed info about IDF uniforms from this period, please post it here.

From the general book cited below, this is only a single illustration and photo. But good for its general focus at least:

Palmach Infantryman -- Palestine 1948
IDF Palmach infantryman.jpg

As with other irregular armies, the members of the Israeli Palmach were armed and equipped from a variety of sources. This infantryman is no exception, in that he wears British khaki drill trousers, a drill shirt of American origin, a civilian woolen cap and a red-and-white shemagh worn as a neck scarf. Equipment comprises a US Army cartridge belt (of World War I vintage) and a US World War II canteen and cover. During the 1940s the Israelis procured a considerable amount of their own weapons from Czechoslovakia and this soldier is armed with a Model 24 rifle, the Czech version of the German 7.92mm Kar 98k … The bayonet is the Model 24 although the bayonet frog is of a British pattern.

... Members of the Jewish Palmach –- shock companies of the Haganah defence force -– use the cover of a ruined house during a firefight with hostile Arabs, 1948. Equipped almost entirely from British stocks, the men are using a .303in Lee Enfield rifle and a 9mm Sten submachine gun.

The American cartridge belt need not actually have been World War I manufacture, since its gathered pocket bottoms were found in post-WW1 and British-made WW2 ones. Although the ends of major wars may often turn up a wide range of equipment odds and ends that find their way to smaller armies and conflicts.

If both the Israeli and Arab sides often used British steel helmets, Lee-Enfield rifles, and Stens, how much battlefield confusion might there have been?

Thanks, Alan! Great point about the 1948 battlefield. With a hodge-podge of uniform pieces worn by both sides - even to the point where some Israelis wore arab-style kufiyas to guard against the sun, wind and sand - it must have been a very confusing experience!

I'm grateful for the photos and the information. As I began looking for images and other details about early Israeli uniforms, I assumed there would be more illustrated references and uniform guides, but no such luck! Apparently it's a rather-neglected topic in popular publications. Thanks again for your help! If you or anyone else has anything further to add, it is most welcome here!

Here's a wikipedia picture, reportedly from 1956. Still very British in style, an IDF man and woman:

1956. IDF Soldiers with a captured artillery piece. Still a mix of international surplus uniform clothes and British helmets or American steel pots.

Does anyone have this 1982 Osprey book (or any of the newer editions) ? Would you recommend it as a good source for 1940s-1950s uniforms and equipment? Thanks.
