Hi all!
I’ve had this for a while not knowing what it is or if it’s military related at all. It’s some sort of hard bakelite resin shell with fine aluminium netting in the middle.
Inside it has what looks like some sort of microphone or speaker connected to an aluminium frame and wires.
Frame is negative (-), insulated connection is positive (+).
Long middle part of frame has a hinge and bracket to hold a battery maybe.
I have only been able to remove one half of the shell from the inner frame, so I don’t know where or to what the wire leads to, or if it’s empty and the wire just leads through the hole in the side. Top (if it is the top) is brass with a slit and hole. Obviously to fit and secure something... maybe rope, parashute or..?
Most of the parts are marked with a little triangle or shield and numbers + the letter J.
Not waterproof! Any ideas???

Even though you say the item is not waterproof, it reminds me of a sonar buoy (also called a sonobuoy) but I cannot say for sure if this is one or not, or whether military or civilian.

Maybe some sort of bathygraphic equipment to measure deep water conditions?

Thanks to both! Interesting idea. Will do a search online and see what comes up. Might do some more dismantling too, maybe over the weekend. Will post findings etc. in the future.
