South America
South America
I have a book and at the front cover and the back. In the front is the world in 1900 and in the back is the world in 1989. I noticed some changes in these borders, not drastic ones, but changes nevertheless. What were some things that caused these? Wars I presume is the most likely....

Zachary

There really hasnt been much war between the south americans. The biggest war there was down there was The Grand Chaco War.No big deal , I think it has to do with S America's geography.its isolated, deserts, huge mountain ranges and endless rainforest keeps S.America's population away from each other and on the edges of the continent.

Well, Chile fought against Peru and Bolivia and we won and we took a Province from Peru and another one from Bolivia. That was before 1900, but 2 cities (and their surrounding areas), Tacna and Arica were kept under a special status and there was suppossed to be a referendum to decide if they were going to be Chilean or Peruvian, anyway, after 1900 (1928) due some negotiations Tacna went to Peru and Arica to Chile.
There were many border disputes between Chile and Argentina (long story, as a matter of fact this disputes were orginated back in 1847) and we almost went to war in 1901. Yet we negotiated and in the "Pactos of Mayo" in May 1902, 54 000 square meters of the disputed land, Patagonia (a territory at the East of Chile and South of Argentina) went to Chile and 40 000 to Argentina.
Those are 2 major changes in our borders.
Best Regards
There were several changes during this time.
In terms of war, that I can think of right off the top of my head, were the Chaco War between Bolivia and Paraguay in the 1930s, and the war between Peru and Ecuador in the 1940s (I think).
Aside from these, there were also various diplomatic negotiations and treaties that shifted and changed the borders of some countries in the region without actually going to war.
Best,
Oskar
