According to my list of Parthian kings, Orodes II reigned between 57 and 38 BC. I guess this is your guy.

Thank You Victor! I was curious as to who got Crassus' severed Head and hand.

The thing I find most intriguing about Carrhae is the fate of the Roman prisoners. Several turn up fighting the Chinese in central Asia. There must be the makings of a good novel in their story!

The name of the Parthian general that defeated Crassus is not known. He was part of the Suren family, so the name Surenas is used to designate him. Ironically he was later killed by king Orodes II.

Hi Victor, I was under the impression that "Suren" was a title rather than a family name among the Parthians?

Best Regards, David

Arguments over 'legion vs. phalanx' have gone for centuries. But 'phalanx' is a very different thing in let's say Philip's Macedonia or Ptolemy's 'wathever' Egypt.
Anyway, Livy wrote one of the very first 'what ifs' on this particular subject. See Livy, IX, 17 ss. on what would have happened if Alexander had not died young and had attacked Italy... of course Romans win!
Also, have a look at Poybius on the same subject in a much more professional, 'non sci-fi' way: XVIII, 28-32.

Prit, I recall sending you info on those 'chinese' Romans. Are you finally doing something on the subject?

From what I know the Suren was one of the seven important clans of the Parthian Empire. They ruled in the Western part of the country IIRC.

Hmmm, it looks like I made post no. 1000 :D
