Cold War's Checkpoint Charlie
Re: Cold War's Checkpoint Charlie
I went through Checkpoint Charlie In the 1980's, as part of a tour group. I was surprised at the lack of monitoring, when walking around East Berlin. A popular tourist attraction in West Berlin was a bleacher which offered a view across the Wall. Immediately across were bleachers filled with East Berliners looking across the Wall into West Berlin.
In 1990 I saw the long lines of Trabants on the Autobahn travelling slowly back to East Berlin with mattresses and furniture tied to the outside.
