Good afternoon all,
Per ...
The article has a convincing narrative that Grant was not an alcoholic in the sense, he was a drunk who could not be sober long enough to accomplish tasks.
As an aside, one of Grant's granddaughter's married someone in the Russian royalty. The granddaughter died as recently as the 1950s.

Ulysses S Grant III lived next to my fraternity house in Clinton, NY. He died in 1968.

Re: President Grant's Civil War Book
In Ken Burns' "Civil War" Shelby Foote speculated that Grant only drank when his wife wasn't around.

Re: President Grant's Civil War Book
Good morning OpanaPointer,
Shelby Foots knew about the then and the now times.
Reading the "Willard's hotel" and the "polished oak of the registration counter" ...... "The times, they are achangin'..."
Reading about a tarnished and ill-fitting uniform,.. was thinking of General William C. Westmoreland's ironed fatigues with the blade-sharp creases.
"500 union generals", "the taking of Richmond": Love it !
.....
I carry around with me a photo of the sign at Fort Marcy Park, Northern Virginia Autonomous Oblast. Fort Marcy was one of the Civil War forts protecting the Washington, D.C. perimeter. Vince Foster passed away at Fort Marcy Park.
......
Later will get surfboard out to recon the civ-mil-intel-gp site.
