Good morning all,

Per ...

"linguistically worthy" is like history: subject to interpretation.

Note "to the point of slighting history".

Article mentions some Cold War stuff: "X-1" (acft), "silent majority",...

I believe Vietnam was a SECOND World Country and not a Third World Country. Recall the Bandung Conference.

It's really a calibration matter, if of any significance, for the leisure class: "Eisenhower knew "..." - "Kennedy realized this even more,..".

Hi South,

So, presumably South Vietnam was First World according to Bandung?

To my mind, both North and South Vietnam were Third World at the time, on account of their then levels of development, regardless of their international political adherences.

But as you say, it is a matter of calibration.

Sid.

Good morning Sid,

Less calibration here and more so political orientation/affiliation.

The best single indicator for economic development - presuming it could be measured at the time and place - is infant mortality rate.

The best single indicator indicator for political orientation........the 2 Vietnams......they weren't part of the first world and they surely weren't in the non-aligned bloc with opposition to colonialism. South Vietnam did have a nominal government that some could argue held to X position. Meanwhile, back at the secret political meeting planning to teach the Americans and French............

How do you say "a real mess" auf French ?
