Good morning all,
Per ...
Attention expert historians: Do not confuse the 1878 Fort Meade, South Dakota with the place in Maryland, next to Washington, D.C. - Different locations !
Note the author's use of broad definitions re "last cavalry HQ" , "horse-mounted military". The Commanding Officer would typically come from the Cavalry Corps but these forts also had dragoons (mounted infantry), artillery, Indian Scouts (later deemed US Army with veterans' benefits), etc.
Believe George Custer was a Lieutenant Col or Col when in Dakota Territory. During US Civil War he was a general but on demobilization of Civil War ranks were reduced.
......
Forgot the South Dakota Governor's name - a WWII General - who, on retirement, was traveling through Arizona and at airport, the Transportation Security inspector told the South Dakotan he must relinquish his key ring with a souvenir bullet. The bullet was considered illegal for carriage on civil aircraft. The retired General and Governor refused to hand over the key ring. It was given to him by FDR. He got to keep his key ring and fly to his destination.

I was offered one of the Gatlings that Custer declined to take along on his last outing. Seller said he had the paperwork, but the price was too rich for my blood.

Good morning Opanapointer,
There were 2 Gatlings he left so as to save on saddle soap and linseed oil to keep the things ready for inspections. We can "march order" the AHF Historians to hold a bake sale to acquire the thing.
It was Joe Foss, MOH. Above link tells all.
Glad you're rapidly recovering.

Fort Pierre Choteau could pass for Fort Courage.

Re: Photos of South Dakota frontier forts
I was just in South Dakota last sunday with The Revenant who wanted to reach Fort Kiowa after a special meet with a bear...
well very bizarre historical points concerning French and Indians relations...
contrary to Hollywood clichés this kind of Forts in South Dakota before Custer arrives, had mainly the only US Army branch not mentionned...just Infantry
e.g., c.1867 there were only 6 companies of 22nd US Infantry Regt in the South Dakota Forts Sully Randall & Dakota
