Good morning all,
Per ...
There was a solid, comprehensive reason the 1980 British "protect and survive" pamphlet did little. Same solid and comprehensive reason for the counterpart pamphlets on this side of pond.
What we know from "if the worst had happened" would not be from the bomb(s) / missile(s) - although aforesaid still in the apocalyptic category. The WORST would have been the civil defense response of survivors. A refuge shelter under the stairs with Schweppes orange, bicarbonate ... no gin ?! no tonic ?! The plan wouldn't work.
For further British Cold War research; that page 10 of "Men Only" Magazine might have contained the secret plans to build knitting needle ladders.
......
We've learned much from the Civil Defense era of the Cold War. Implementing the knowledge is a different matter and so far - much work is needed.

Britain was a little too small for nuclear warfare.
