Afghan Rebels vs. Soviet Tanks 1979-1989

Post by Edward L. Hsiao » 10 May 2019 02:03

I have been reading articles of the Afghan resistance against the Soviet Army and Air Force. The Afghan rebels were pretty successful in ambushing the Soviet ground army causing plenty of deaths among the Soviet soldiers. In the middle of 1980's the Afghan rebels took a pretty good toll of Soviet aircraft shot down mainly by man portable surface to air missiles. My question is what kind of anti-tank weapons does the Afghan rebels use against Soviets tanks? The Afghan puppet army and air force had suffered heavy losses both on the ground and in the air as well because of the actions of the Afghan resistance.

Missile wise they used the BGM-71 TOW and the MILAN, both delivered in 1988. They also acquired captured tanks and had a number of recoilless rifles and anti-tank grenade launchers. Here is a list via Wiki of weapons used:

Thank you for your prompt answer. I wonder if there were any action reports of the use of BGM-71 and the MILAN anti-tank missiles against enemy tanks by Afghan rebels? This is the first time today that I ever heard of Afghan rebels that uses anti-tank missiles against enemy tanks. Plenty of kills against enemy tanks that's for sure!
