U-boat Veterans of WW-II in the Volksmarine?

#1

There were many veteran WWII U-boat officers and men that had joined and served in the Bundesmarine of West Germany. Do you know any names of WWII U-boats veterans that served in the Volksmarine of East Germany? Not many of them were in the Volksmarine during the Cold War.

Well I know at least one WWII U-boat commander that became a high ranking navel officer of the Volksmarine. I forgot the name of that officer.

Friedrich Elchlepp (1924 - 2002), retired as a Volksmarine rear admiral in November 1984, served as a Watch Officer (last rank: first lieutenant) on U 1206 and U 3514. From 1954 - 1956 he was deputy of then rear admiral Heinz Neukirchen, who was a commander of a Kriegsmarine submarine chaser stationed in Norway in 1945.
Rear admiral Heinrich Jordt, commander of the 6th coastal border brigade, served in the Kriegsmarine as a petty officer on minesweeper M1. In December 1952 he became commander of the U-Boat school (U-Boot-Lehranstalt, special project S 7) in Sassnitz-Dwasieden. However, in August 1953 due to economic problems the GDR U-Boat programme was ceased and the school closed.

Thank you for your good response. The Kriegsmarine veterans of WWII that went to served in the Volksmarine of East Germany was a little known topic indeed. Still I like to see more information being put in this topic.

Johann Reckhoff was commanding officer of U-398 during WWII. His next command was the sailing training ship SS Albert Leo. After WWII,Reckhoff was a rear admiral of the Volksmarine, holding high positions in East Germany.
