Re: U.S. Civil War
How gradual? One generation? 10? 100? 1000? Talk the talk, but don't walk the walk.
Nice to see that politicians have not changed much at all.

Re: U.S. Civil War
Lincoln inherited a difficult situation. Snapping one's fingers and declaring social utopia just didn't work in those days. Those humans who had survived tribalism into the 1860s were sometimes in general not very nice. Jim Crow continued for another century. … Due to human nature, gradualism was the only option for Lincoln.

Re: U.S. Civil War
Lincoln needed a legal way to "deprive" US citizens of their "property". He could free the slaves in the states "now in insurrection" because they were in rebellion against the US government. So wand-waving wasn't an option. As late as WWII Gen. George Catlett Marshal refused to integrate the US Army because "the middle of a war is no time for social experiments."

Re: U.S. Civil War
Hello Paul. I have good news. All those persons committing atrocities during the U.S. Civil War and on through WWII are no longer with us. You can finally rest easy.

And there's quite a few north of the Manson/Nixon Line as well. The Y-donor used to host the July Klavern in our garage, this being in Indiana.

Re: U.S. Civil War
Virginia succeeded from the Union in 1861. West Virginia succeeded from Virginia and the Confederacy in 1863. Most of West Virginia is below the Mason-Dixon Line. … Fifty percent of allegations of racism are psychological projection. … Since the Civil War, the profiled American redneck species has a verifiable and solid alibi for not having perpetrated millions and millions of atrocities and mass killings committed away from U.S. soil.

Re: U.S. Civil War
Well, there are occurrences of false allegations of racism. Lincoln and L.B.J. would have been the happiest people in the world if racism had ceased.
