Israeli Artillery

#1

Post by Spearfish » 10 Jul 2020, 13:13

Most studies of the Israeli forces during the Six Day and Holy Day Wars have focussed upon armoured units but I am interested in the artillery arm, which appears to be generally ignored. I am seeking details of Israeli Defence Force artillery strength and distribution in June 1967, during the War of Attrition and the 1973 Holy Day War. For example did brigades (except paratroop units) have an artillery battalion or was it simply a 160mm or 120mm mortar unit? I have been told the IDF had 681 tubes in June 1967 but, again, I wonder whether or not many were mortars.
Can anyone help?

The IDF Artillery Corps has historically been undervalued as a tactical arm, the military doctrine focused on mobility directed funding to Armor and Air Force and these were supposed to fill any gap, outside of equipment captured in earlier conflicts. The War of Attrition forced a rethink of policy although this was still inadequate when the 1973 war broke out.

The pdf. in the attached link gives a good summary of Artillery strength and also Infantry unit support weapons.

You're welcome, the questions you are asking are making me look a bit deeper into an interesting subject.

Steve.
