Native Americans in the War for Southern Independence

Native Americans fought for both the United States and Confederate States armies.

Some had their own units others were integrated with regular units

Many Native Americans were commissioned as officers
Brigadier General Stand Watie and Colonel Peter Pitchlyan commanded troops in the Confederacy

The Confederacy was successful in seeking alliances with Comanches, Seminoles, Osages, Chickasaws, Choctaws, and the Creeks.

According to Judge James M. Keyes (Pryor, Okla.)-
I regard General Stand Watie as one of the bravest and most capable men, and foremost soldier ever produced by the North American Indians. He was wise in council and courageous in action
