I had great respect for Russia. I enjoyed watching the military May Day parades on Red Square. I still have great respect for the "ordinary" Russian civilian. But my prior admiration of Putin and his armies is gone.

Russia dismantled their conventional warfare apparatus and started focusing on asymmetrical warfare.

A cursory look at the 2nd Chechen war would show that the Ukraine's civilians would experience the same fate as Grozny as Russia leverages their largest-in the world conventional munitions stockpile. In this war Putin also had political problems executing the war and it did not proceed in the most rational way.

The irony is that to minimize damage to civilians and housing US/NATO should cease giving Ukraine military aid (limit to humanitarian) and provide Russia 'lend-lease' - 100,000 Precision guided munitions, exactly the thing they lack compared to the US.

When Russia restarts the material war next year, even if it is only the same level as 2022 they will eliminate housing stock of over half a million and leave the other half million residents living in a garbage dump of town, city.
